Radon Update
New Regulations for Radon Measurement Technicians
New regulations for Radon Testing and Mitigation were published in the New Jersey Register on June 6, 2022. These regulations will be operative on December 3, 2022. See the following NJ DEP Radon Section links:
- NEW Regulations at N.J.A.C. 7:28-27A
- FULL Adoption Document
- New Jersey Radon Certification Requirements
Representatives of the NJ Department of Environmental Protection Radon Section (hereafter referred to as the ‘Radon Section‘) urge all MET’s to read the new regulations (NJAC 7:28-27A) and to read the AARST Protocols for Conducting Measurements of Radon:

NOTE: If you are not receiving notices from the Radon Section via email, please contact them. They are no longer using the USPS to send out applications and renewal notices
Leading up to December 3rd, 2022
- All Radon MET’s should have sent their Initial Measurement Technician application, along with $75, to the Radon Section by October 3, 2022. If you have not done so, you should call the Radon Section immediately.
- The Radon Section will send you a receipt of your application and fee. Call the Radon Section if you do not receive your email receipt within 1 month
- Once the application has been reviewed and approved, you will receive an Acknowledgement Notice from the Radon Section. This Notice should be immediately forwarded to the certified radon measurement business (‘radon lab’ or labs) you wish to affiliate with.
- The lab will send you back their affiliate agreement, QA plan, safety plan and safety test. Complete and return these documents to the lab immediately.
- The lab(s) will review the documents and forward a notice of completion to the Radon Section. Once that is processed, the Radon Section will forward you a RADON CERTIFICATION APPROVAL email. That is your electronic approval to continue to perform radon tests on or after December 3rd, 2022. Forward that email to the lab(s) you have certified with. A hard copy of your new certification will arrive in the mail some time thereafter.
- IMPORTANT: The new regulations (national/EPA standards) stipulate that radon testing in multi-family buildings requires a separate certification. If you want to be certified to test 3 or more attached dwellings or living units, you must obtain a separate Multi-Family Building MET Certification which will require additional training above and beyond your previous training. You can obtain that training and apply for the multi-family certification at any time.*
- IMPORTANT: The new regulations (national/EPA standards) stipulate that radon testing in schools/daycares/large buildings/commercial properties requires a separate certification. If you want to be certified to test schools and large buildings, you must obtain a separate Schools and Large Buildings MET Certification which will require additional training above and beyond your previous training. You can obtain that training and apply for the Schools/Large Buildings certification at any time.*
- Nationally approved training courses are available for Multi-family and Schools/Large Buildings, and were provided to all MET’s on a list from the Radon Section via email on September 13, 2022. The list can also be found here: Current Measurement Courses 9-2022.
NOTE: The NJDEP has approved an 8-hour Kansas State University course as being
acceptable for both Multi-family and Schools & Large Buildings (see KSU Radon Course Schedule )
On & After December 3rd, 2022
The new regulations include a number of changes which must be implemented on December 3rd, 2022, including but not limited to:
